Addis Ababa, July 13, 2017 (FBC) -The constitutive meeting of the Media Forum of the Council of African Political Parties (CAPP) held in Niamey, Niger on 8th of July, 2017 has elected EPRDF to lead the Media Forum.
The General Assembly of the Media Forum conducted a procedural session in which the executive rule of the Media Forum was adopted and the members of the executive office were elected including the president, two vice presidents and a rapporteur of the executive office.
Accordingly, EPRDF, nominated by Patriotic Salivation Movement (MPS) of Chad, elected to be president of the Media Forum while Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS-tarayya) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) of Ghana nominated by Ethiopia and Sudan, respectively, took the vice presidency. Building and Development Party (BDP) of Libya assumed the position of rapporteur.
Kebede Kassa, representing EPRDF, commended the confidence African political parties showed up on Ethiopia and its ruling party. He also reiterated the party’s readiness and commitment to carry out the role of presidency with utmost responsibility.
The Media Forum is an organization for the media cadres of the African political parties to advance their profession through updated technologies, discussions on issues of interest and exchange of experiences. It is expected to enhance the common African action and attract the interest all over the world.
According to a statement office of the EPRDF sent to FBC, the Secretary General of CAPP, Dr. Nafie Ali Nafie, explained the need to establish the Media Forum to realize the objectives of the council.
He said, “the Media Forum should play to correctly introduce Africa instead of the negative perception regularly viewed in particular by the western media.”
He also highlighted that the Forum should bid for reforms needed in the Regional and International Organizations so as to justly serve the interests of the peoples without hegemony in the interest of certain countries.
President of PNDS-Tarayya, Mohamed Bazoum, who addressed the inaugural session, referred to the past African experiences of the One Party System with the single information media source and said that governments in Africa should meet the demands of granting the liberties of the press and media to be able to face the growing challenges.
The constitutive meeting as well included a round table discussion on freedom, responsibility and Regulation of the Media with regard to the practice in Niger.
The President of Central Africa Journalists Association, Stanis Nkundiye, delivered a statement in which he appreciated the idea of the establishment of the Media Forum and expressed the hope that the Forum will contribute in advancing Journalism in Africa through such round table discussions.
Council of African Political Parties (CAPP) is a nongovernmental organization established by 47 African political parties representing 35 African countries in the constitutive conference held in Khartoum, Sudan on 27/28 April 2013. Now, four years after its establishment, the membership of the Council has expanded to almost all African Countries.
The CAPP’s objectives are acting as a vehicle of cooperation and coordination between the political parties, promoting the culture of peace and the settlement of conflicts through peaceful means and fighting against poverty.
CAPP has Youth Wing and Women Wing besides the Economic Council and the newly established Media Forum. The council has cooperation with the African Union, the Pan – African Parliament, Council of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), the Latin American and Caribbean Political Parties (COPPPAL), UNESCO and Climate and Ecological Alliance.
