Addis Ababa, January 26, 2017 (FBC) –Awash-Kombolcha segment of the Awash-Kombolch-Woldia electrified railway line project will start a test run in August.

The construction of Awash-Kombolch-Woldia, the line which represents an extension to Mekelle-Woldia/ Hara Gebeya railway project, was launched two years and three months ago.
The project has reached at 53 percent completion.
Of the 65 bridges needed along the line, 35 were built, Engineer Abdulkerim Mohamed, head of the project at the Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC), told FBC.
Moreover, of the 12 tunnels which will be drilled in this project, six tunnels have been holed through and track laying operations has been started on four of them, he said.
According to him, track laying has been carried out on 150 km of the 390km Awash-Kombolch-Woldia railway line.
Along with the track laying operations, installation of power transmission line is underway along Awash-Kombolcha segment. The installation has reached at 67 percent completion, he indicated.
The project is progressing as per scheduled and it will start test run in August, he noted.
Awash-Kombolch-Woldia electrified railway line is being built by Turkish Yapi Merkezi Company at a cost of 1.7 billion US dollars.
Two indigenous firms are participating as sub-contractors in the project.
