FM Dr Workneh confers with Somalia’s Prime Minister

Addis Ababa, November 25, 2016 (FBC) – Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Workneh Gebeyehu received the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia Mr. Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke in his offices today, whereby the two sides discussed over issues ranging from current security situation of Somalia up to boosting economic cooperation.

On the discussion, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Workneh Gebeyehu noted Ethiopia and Somalia have enjoyed strong cooperation in areas of peace and security. T

he Minister reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to further support the ongoing peace process and making the upcoming parliamentary election peaceful and stable.

Prime Minister Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke on his part wished the newly appointed Ethiopian Foreign Minister a fruitful tenure and also expressed his gratitude to Ethiopian soldiers for sacrificing for the peace of Somalia.

Discussing the current situation in Somalia, the Prime Minister said the upcoming parliamentary election preparation is going well and that the political situation is quite calm.

The Prime Minister also pointed out the need from Somalia to share Ethiopia’s experience in building federalism and governance issues.

“We also want Ethiopia’s support in technical areas and trainings in capacity building of Somalia’s institutions,” he added.

Dr Workneh also underscored Ethiopia’s firm position saying “the major solution for the problems in Somalia should come from the people and Government of Somalia.”

He reassured the Prime Minister that, Ethiopia will continue to share its experience in building Federalism system and support the government of Federal Republic of Somalia in various technical areas.

The two sides further agreed to diversify the existing strong security cooperation between the two countries as well as intensify infrastructural and economic areas of cooperation.
