Government, community brought violence under control in Oromia

Addis Ababa, October 11, 2016 (FBC) –The government, in partnership with the community, have brought under control the violence occurred in some areas of Oromia Regional State, said the state’s communication affairs bureau.

In a statement issued for the press today, the bureau said that those areas which experienced violence in recent days have resumed back to their regular and peaceful activities.

Those who were leaders in the violence are being detained based of the tips from the people, the bureau said.

Lives were lost and properties were damaged in the violence occurred in some areas of the regional state, said Fekadu Tessemma, head of the state’s communication affairs bureau.

Clean water projects, health institutions, farmers training institutions, large industries and individual properties were targeted by these forces of destruction, he said.

East Shoa, west Arsi, east Guji and Arsi as well as Finfine Special Zone Sebta town were areas which experienced the highest violence during the past days, he said.

During the violence, these forces set fire on sugarcane plantation developed on 501 hectares of land by farmers in east Shoa zone as well as on factories owned by foreign investors in Sebta town, he said.

They caused the damage by receiving instruction from external forces that do not want the peace and stability of the country, he said.

According to Fekadu, the community, elders and security forces have played a significant role in the efforts made to maintain peace and restore stability in those violence affected areas.

Those people who were displaced from Burayu and Shashemene areas have returned back to their homes with the support of the community and the government, he indicated.

Fekadu finally urged the residents to safeguard the prevailing peace and scale up their development efforts.
