Addis Ababa, May 11, 2016 (FBC) –Terrorist group members trained by Eritrean government were detained while preparing to commit an act of terrorism in Ethiopia.
According to a statement the Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Service and Federal Police Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce sent to FBC today, members of the group were given training in Eritrea.
They had been under the surveillance of the National Intelligence and Security Service from the beginning until the end, the statement said.
After receiving terrorist training in Asmara, they flew to Uganda with an Eritrean passport and their names changed. Then, they traveled by a vehicle to Kenya and crossed to the southern part of Ethiopia via Moyle, Kenya, and hid at a jungle there, the statement added.
However, in an operation conducted on May 6, 2016, they were arrested while preparing to carry out an act of terrorism. They were apprehended together with their weapons and other materials, the taskforce said.
Some members of the terrorist group were shot dead while trying to escape, it said.
Previously, Ethiopian defense force and police forces of Amhara and Tigray regional states managed to foil repeated attempts of Eritrean sponsored terrorist groups to enter into Ethiopia via the northern part of the country, it said.
Similarly, their attempt to go into Ethiopia via the southern part was thwarted, the taskforce said.
Members of the terror group are under investigation, according to the statement.
