Addis Ababa, March 16, 2016 (FBC) – China has appreciated Ethiopia’s effort to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
“I believe that Ethiopia can undertake a successful activity if it becomes a non-permanent member of the UNSC,” La Yifan, Ambassador of China to Ethiopia, said in an exclusive interview with ENA yesterday.
The multifaceted contributions that Ethiopia has been making both in Africa and at a global level justify that Ethiopia will be successful if it becomes a member of the Council, he said.
Ambassador Yifan further said his country admires Ethiopia’s successive economic growth and the contribution it has been making in peacekeeping operations.
Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to mediate and promote reconciliation in neighboring countries affected by conflicts are laudable, he added.
Moreover, Ethiopia is a model country in contributing a large number of troops for peacekeeping mission and hosting refugees, he noted.
Ambassador Yifan is hopeful that Ethiopia will be elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the term 2017-2018 and contributes its share for global peace.
Ethiopia officially launched a campaign recently for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.
Ethiopia, one of the 51 pioneer countries that founded the United Nations in 1945, served the Security Council for two terms – in 1967-1968 and 1989-1990.
