Chief of Ethiopian Military General Seare Mekonen and a visiting retired comrade Major General Gezae Abera were assassinated by the General’s security person at the living General’s residence in Addis Ababa hours after the execution of the President of Amhara Regional State, Dr. Ambachew Mekonen along with his Political Divisions’ Advisory and regional Court President of the region.
This incident of crime was never a simple and accidental phenomena. It was a devastating chain of plots to overthrow the regional government, and later to attack the national government as a whole. What rammed the coup plotters to such a catastrophic act, and who was in the lead behind the situation?
Deputy Chief of the Prime Minister, Demeke Mekonen, and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, Gedu Andargachew were abroad while all the scenario of coup in the region they represented happened, and later the assassination of the Chief of Military and former comrade major General’s occurred the same day, almost same time in the late evening. They directly forwarded messages of grievance, and comfort to the families and people right away via telephone. How quick was the statement from Nigusu Tilahu, and Bilile Fitsum from the Prime Minister’s office of Press given to various national and international media? All speculations lead to one point in figure to why such bloody phenomena is needed to take place after one year and few months Prime Minister Dr.Abiy Ahmed took the post of leadership in the ministers office.
Prime Minister Dr.Abiy’s entry to the top leadership of Ethiopia first created an emotional mob of supporters not because he drafted, and presented the policies and change of government plans, rather the mob was marching, shouting and availing here and there having the theme that this top leadership as snatched from Tigrean long standing fighter leadership, and taken by the Oromo, and Amhara. Dr.Abiy’s plan and pledge to the Ethiopian people was just not a deep rooted change of Economic and Political shifts, it was a positive vows of forgiveness, addition and love in thematic basket of “CHANGE” which is a repeatedly spoken term that has welcomed longstanding opposition parties, and persons ever since.
The Tigrai regional State has been the major actor in the national political spectrum framed to lead the multinational, ethnically diversified, and highly populated nation, Ethiopia merging the stake of other regional parties representing the multiversity of its population under the umbrella of a national party, EPRDF/ Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front/ the national coalition ruling party since its foundation. As put by observatories, victimized parts of the Ethiopian population, the so called political sphere in transition in Ethiopia being piloted is leaving the entire nation with more of a scar that seem to never erase, and build trust again. Where is the nation going?
