Addis Ababa, November 18, 2017 (FBC) –Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, said Ethiopia and the United States (US) are working together on various peace and security issues.
They are cooperating in the fight against global terrorism and to maintain peace and security in Sudan and South Sudan, he said.
Dr Workneh was speaking at the US–African Union (AU) High Level Dialogue held in Washington,D.C., which attracted about 40 African foreign affairs minsters.
The US has provided support to restore peace and security as well as promote democracy in Ethiopia, the Minister said.
After telling the participants about the impressive economic growth registered in Ethiopia over the past years, Dr Workneh invited the US investors to come and invest in his country.
In a separate development, Dr Workneh held talks with members of the U.S. Congress.
During the talks held with Senator James M. Inhofe, Congressman John Garamendi and other Congress members, Dr Workneh briefed them on the current situations in Ethiopia and IGAD’s efforts to bring peace in South Sudan and Somalia.
The government of Ethiopia is working to ensure the sustainability of the ongoing economic growth by maintaining peace in the country as well as to further strengthen its ties with the U.S. government.
He further said IGAD, under the leadership of Ethiopia, is doing more to ensure and build peace in South Sudan and Somalia.
Members of the Congress for their part said that the US government will work together with Ethiopia as the Horn of African country is our strategic partner.
They also commended the key role being played by Ethiopia to maintain peace in South Sudan and the country’s support for refugees.
