Ethiopian athletics team become victim of robbery at IAAF’s flagship event in London

Addis Ababa, August 7, 2017 (FBC) –Members of Ethiopian athletics team, who are participating at the 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships in London, have become victim of robbery.

They had their two hotel rooms at the 9th floor on Guoman Tower Hotel raided last night.

The two rooms are where athletes Tirnesh Dibaba along with her two sisters and Mare Dibaba, Ethiopian woman marathon runner, are staying in.

The burglars, believed to be the hotel’s room attendants (cleaners), stolen money and other personal properties from the athletes’ pockets, wallets and drawers, according to Sport Zone reporter from London.

The cleaners were making us feel anxious by repeatedly visiting our classrooms beyond their normal working hours, Tirunesh said.

The Ethiopian athletics team leader had informed the situation to the hotel and heads of the hotel for their part said “they would work to recover the stolen money and properties.”

Ethiopia won gold and silver in 10000 women race at the 16 edition of IAAF’s flagship event last Saturday.

Almaz Ayana finished the race around 300 meters clear of her rivals by clocking 30:16.32 seconds. Tirunesh Dibaba, the former world and Olympic champion, took the silver medal.

And yesterday, Tamirat Tolla added a silver medal in men’s marathon to help Ethiopia lead the medal table in second place next to USA.
