Addis Ababa June15/2017 The Security Council decided yesterday to extend the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) until March 2018.
According to UN website, the Council extended the mandate realizing that UNSOM supports the political process and encouraged by the enhanced interaction between the Mission and civil society at the national and regional levels.
The resolution was adopted unanimously.
The Council welcomed the commitment of the Government of Somalia to various national processes, including the immediate issues of allocating powers, sharing resources and revenues with federal member states and developing a political system and federal justice model.
It also commended the efforts of United Nations agencies and other humanitarian actors and donors in calling the possible famine early and in scaling up life-saving assistance to vulnerable populations.
Furthermore, the Council strongly condemned all violations and abuses against children in armed conflict and called on the Federal Government to implement the Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as actions plans signed in 2012.
