On Monday June 19, 2017 the MU delegation visited the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) located in Xian city, China. The delegation held a roundtable discussion with the management members, deans of selected colleges and schools of NP
On behalf of President Wang Jinsong, Vice President Zhang Weihong gave welcoming remarks during the opening of the meeting. MU President, Dr. Kindeya Gebrehiwot introduced Mekelle University and gave a brief summary on the strategic focuses of MU and the overall objective of the mission to China. He also discussed status of the already existing communications with NPU with special focus on capacity building. Common desires of involving in capacity building were the main agenda of the meeting. Dr. Kindeya also pointed out the timeliness of joining hands with its implication one the Chinese government One Belt One Road initiative.
Hosted by Vice President Zhang Wehong, the meeting with MU delegation was attended by Vice President of International Education and Vice Minister of International Cooperation Sun Wubin, Deputy Director of International Cooperation Department Zhang Fuli, Vice President of Humanities and Law School Yang Yunxia, School of Management Vice President Liu Chenguang, Assistant Dean of the School of Power and Energy Deng Shuanghou, Deputy Director of the Office of Academic Affairs, and, Vice President of the Graduate School of Academic Affairs, Ms. Guo Peirong.
The MU delegation visited various facilities of NPU including the Student Innovation Center and the Laboratory facilities at the new campus of NPU. Later in the afternoon, a specific discussion session was held with the vice dean and staff members of the School of Management.
NPU is an important center for scientific and technological innovations in China. In the last 70 years, to date, it has graduated more than 140,000 students in various disciplines including 6 PhD programs.
During the visit to NPU, It was agreed that a delegation of NPU will soon visit MU to reach upon strategic censuses and be able to formalize the partnership.
Communication between MU and NPU are initiated by highly committed Ethiopian PhD students at studying at NPU. With further discussions, NPU will play significant role in the capacity building of MU’s staff members.
