Ethiopia seeks UN intervention to prevent escalation of tensions

The Ethiopian government has issued a statement on the situation between Djibouti and Eritrea.

Addis Ababa said it is closely following the developments on the Djibouti-Eritrea border, and calls for restraint.

The country has warned the international community that the current border crisis between Djibouti and Eritrea could spiral out of control, and so the UN should engage both nations to give diplomacy a way for solution.

For now, Ethiopia has called for restraint and asked the two states to refrain from escalating tensions.

The country’s foreign ministry in a statement said Addis Ababa fully supports the statement issued on the situation by the Chairperson of AU Commission, including the deployment of fact finding mission to the area.

Ethiopia and Eritrea had one of the bloodiest wars in Africa from 1998 to 2000.The cause was similar to the current brawl between Asmara and Djibouti-border.

Since that war Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of supporting terrorist groups which Asmara rejects.
