In its 8th regular meeting held today, Office of National Council for the Coordination of Public Participation on the Construction of the dam said Ethiopians have contributed over 28 billion birr for the dam during the past five years, more than half of the 49.5 billion birr pledges made in the reported period.

The Office managed to earn the highest amount of money last Ethiopian fiscal year compared to the past five years, by collecting 8.6 billion of the total 12.4 billion birr pledged in the budget year, it was indicated.

Ethiopian Diaspora Communities have so far raised 2.6 billion US dollars for the construction of the dam. The business community, civil servants, Diaspora community, farmers, pastoralists and Ethiopian people in general have continued funding the construction of the dam.

Dr Debretsion Gebremichael, Deputy Prime Minister for Finance and Economic Cluster and Minister of Communication and Information Technology said the construction of the dam has reached at 54 percent completion status.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Tedros Adhanom, on his part said Ethiopia has told Egypt to stop its extremist institutions collaborating with local extremist forces operating to deter the construction of the dam.

At 6,000 megawatts, the dam will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa once completed, it was noted.
