Addis Ababa, May 28, 2016 (FBC) –Ethiopians across the country have celebrated the 25th anniversary of Ginbot 20 (May 28), which marks the downfall the Derg regime.
The day, in particular, was marked colorfully at the Addis Ababa stadium in the presence of senior government officials, Addis Ababa dwellers and invited guests.
Addressing the crowd at the stadium, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said that Ginbot 20 is a special day which laid the foundation for Ethiopians to enjoy from peace, democracy and development gains.
“We should honor those martyrs who lost their lives while fighting to topple the dictatorial Derg regime,” he said.
A hard fought battle is expected from the current generation to eradicate poverty, the Primer indicated.
He further said under the leadership of the ruling the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), a lot of changes were registered during the past 25 years.
Remarkable successes were recorded in creating investors, addressing unemployment and housing problems, empowering women, protecting the rights of citizens as well as increasing the productivity of small-scale farmers, he said.
Hailemariam said “the celebration helps to renew our commitment for the renaissance of the country, improve our strength, and look into our weaknesses.”
