Addis Ababa, January 25, 2016 (FBC) – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced that Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn will co-chair the UN’s High-level Advisory Group for Every Woman Every Child, together with President Michelle Bachelet Jeria of Chile.
The Secretary-General said “Women, children and adolescents are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda, and continued commitment, leadership and action will be critical to achieving our goal of ending all preventable deaths of women, children and adolescents by 2030 and enabling them to reach their full potential.”
The High-Level Advisory Group will help provide leadership and inspire ambitious action for women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health during the transition from the Millennium Development Goals to the universal Sustainable Development Goals agenda.
It will advise the Secretary-General, guide the transition of the Every Woman Every Child movement and the newly launched Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health, and will link with other advocacy or advisory groups to encourage collaboration and integration with relevant areas of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Alternative co-chairs will be Ms. Tarja Halonen, former President of Finland and Mr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, former President of Tanzania.
The Global Strategy provides a roadmap to end all preventable deaths of women, children and adolescents, and ensure that they not only survive, but also thrive and transform the world.
With $25billion in initial commitments from over 120 organizations and over 40 governments, a fully implemented Global Strategy will transform societies so that women, children and adolescents everywhere not only have access to health but can attain their full potential as adults.
