Ethiopia working to become non-permanent member of UN Security Council

(EBC, January 2, 2016)- Preparations have been made to make Ethiopia a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The country is the only candidate from East Africa.

Foreign Affairs Minister Tewodros Adhanom said lobbying is underway by using best experience of other countries in view of election campaign and human resource.

He added that activities are also being carried out with regard to structure and logistics preparations.

According to the minister, following the agreement of Seychelles to withdraw its candidacy favoring Ethiopia, the country could win two-thirds of the vote for the seat.

Ethiopia’s success in securing 186 votes out of the 190 during the membership election of UN human right council shows the country is positioned favorably, he stated.
