I

Addis Ababa, September 4, 2017 (FBC) – The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today held an emergency session on the nuclear explosive test conducted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) yesterday
The event was the first meeting of the Security Council under Ethiopia’s presidency.

In his remarks to the Council, Ambassador Tekeda Alemu, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the UN, said the Council should use all the tools at its disposal to bring Korea back to the negotiating table.

He further expressed his hope that the Council will take appropriate action to bring pressure to bear on DPRK while maintaining the unity of the Council on this very delicate issue.

Jeffrey Feltman, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, for his part called upon the Security Council to remain united and take appropriate action against Sunday’s nuclear explosive test conducted by Korea.

“The time has come to exhaust all diplomatic means before it is too late,” Nikki Haley said at the meeting held in New York.

Today’s meeting was the Council’s second emergency meeting on the DPRK in less than a week and the tenth time the body has met to discuss the DPRK this year.
